JUAN GOYTISOLO REFUSES INTERNATIONAL PRIZE
This past August 2009, Juan Goytisolo refused Libya’s International Prize of Literature and its monetary award of 150,000 euros (approximately 215,000 dollars). His reasons stated in El Pais concerned the corruption of the “oil monarchies” of the Gulf and of the leaders and emirs that indecently exhibit their riches in Casablanca, Cairo, Beirut, and Marbella while the populations of their countries remain impoverished, without education, and jobless. The work of Juan Goytisolo, one of the founding members of The Reading Room, is in The Reading Room/8 as well as in many previous issues.

In a gala at the Hotel Ritz in Madrid, November 2008, Barbara Probst Solomon became the first American journalist to win Spain’s top journalism award, the Francisco Cerecedo Prize.
